black and white photo of Jami McFarland

A photo of Jami, taken outdoors in front of a wintery treescape. She is wearing a cable-knit hat with a faux fur pom pom, a check scarf, and a black coat with a pin that reads, "Protect Trans Lives". She has long dark hair and a nose ring in her right nostril. She is looking directly into the camera with a smile.

Jami McFarland

Dr. Jami McFarland (she/her) is currently a Mitacs-funded Research Associate working with Direct[Message], a collaborative, community-arts project for, by, and with older adults living in Southwestern Ontario. Working under the co-supervision of Drs. Carla Rice and Nadine Changfoot, and in collaboration with Hamilton's artist-run Centre[3], Jami's co-designed research project aims to make the arts more accessible for and inclusive of older adults aging with and into disabilities.

After Jami completes this research with Centre[3] and older adult community members, she will begin a SSHRC Postdoctoral Fellowship under the supervision of Dr. Carla Rice. Her postdoctoral program will extend her doctoral work about mainstream representations of aging, queerness, and disability, titled "Timely Representations: The Queer Elder Figure in Canadian and U.S. American Film and Television." Specifically, Jami will collaborate with 2SLGBTQ older adults to co-create diverse digital stories to challenge and build on a narrow set of queer elder narratives found in film and television, and to promote a greater understanding of how 2SLGBTQ older adults respond to these visual narratives.

Jami holds a PhD in Gender, Sexuality, and Women's Studies at Western University, an MA in Feminist and Gender Studies at the University of Ottawa, and an Honours BA in English at Nipissing University.
