About Bodies in Translation

Bodies in Translation: Activist Art, Technology, and Access to Life is a research project that creates collaborative partnerships between artists, arts organizations, activists, scholars, and educators. We cultivate activist art from a decolonizing and cripped lens, with the goals of expanding understandings of the vitality of mind-body difference and advancing social justice.

Mind-body difference includes physical disabilities, sensory differences, mental differences, intellectual disabilities, facial and physical differences, bodies perceived as “too big” or “too small,” ageing bodies, racialized bodies (those undiagnosed or misdiagnosed by systemic racism or worn down by colonial capitalism), bodies that do not fit dominant gender expectations, and any other differences perceived as being outside the restrictive and oppressive “norm” for human bodies and minds.

Bodies in Translation is based at Re•Vision: The Centre for Art and Social Justice at the University of Guelph.

Call for Proposals

Bodies in Translation is looking for an Indigenous artist to create an artistic response to the content featured on the Bodies in Translation Knowledge Platform, a new website we are building as a resource centre for courses and information about mind-body difference. We are accepting proposals from artists working in any medium, but the work should be delivered in a format that can be featured on the website.

Scope of Work

  • To be determined in consultation with artist

Fee

  • Our total budget is $5000, inclusive of CARFAC licencing fees for long-term use of the material

Eligibility Criteria

  • Indigenous artist interested in engaging with these dimensions of mind-body difference

Submission Procedure

Submit application via email to Elisabeth Harrison. Following the Artist Submission Information listed below, your application should include a brief statement about your interest and experience, and include portfolio examples either attached or with a link to a website.

Artist Selection Process

All submissions will be reviewed by a committee from Bodies in Translation. The committee will select an artist based on the demonstration of excellence of past work.

Equity is considered throughout the review process. Selected prospective artists may be invited to discuss their work with the committee by video conference, phone call, email or other text-based methods.
